I loved the zany premise: the unnamed narrator, who works for a small advertising firm, gets a threatening visit one day. Instead I read A Wild Sheep Chase, a fairly short one for Murakami at just under 300 pages. First I tried Norwegian Wood, but, ironically, it was so normal (from the little I read, a standard, nostalgic coming-of-age novel set on a college campus) that I felt disoriented and set it down after 20 pages – I’ll keep it on the shelf for some other time. For Japanese Literature Challenge 13, run by Meredith of Dolce Belezza, I decided to pick up another of his books. I was utterly entranced by my first two Haruki Murakami novels, The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle and Kafka on the Shore both are so richly layered, dreamlike and bizarre. We start the book after the station exploded and all the (now) refugees are on a freighter. I've been waiting for this one since the first book, and it did not disappoint! I listened to this on audio and the same reader (Jillian Macie) as the other books was excellent as usual. It will make more sense if you've read the other books first, although that's probably not absolutely essential.Īrin the human who can kick ass but still have a sense of humour, and Rykal, the alien who is the definition of kick ass. It contains swearing, violence, sensual sex scenes and silver aliens with fangs. Warning: This book is a science-fiction alien romance. He isn't just threatening, he's friendly and threatening, and if Arin isn't careful, that could become a major problem. One particular alien, who goes by the name of Rykal, seems be constantly getting inside her personal space. To make things worse, they're being held hostage by a group of very threatening, very menacing silver-skinned Kordolians, who are insistent that all they want is safe passage to Earth to kill oversized insects. That's something she would normally handle with ease, except that now her people are stuck in Earth's orbit on a doomed superfreighter. She's supposed to be in charge of a squad of peacekeepers. Sergeant Arin Varga has a problem on her hands. In the book, Krook’s death was investigated and authorities on spontaneous combustion were cited to prove that the phenomena really did exist. Dickens responded by writing a coroner’s inquest into the next segment of Bleak House. George Henry Lewes, a writer for the Leader, complained in his February 1853 column that people just didn’t suddenly burst into flame. The unfortunate character to meet this fate is Krook, the brother of Mrs. In Bleak House a character dies via an unusual method - spontaneous combustion. Here is a small burnt patch of flooring here is the tinder from a little bundle of burnt paper, but not so light as usual, seeming to be steeped in something and here is-is it the cinder of a small charred and broken log of wood sprinkled with white ashes, or is it coal? Oh, horror, he IS here! And this from which we run away, striking out the light and overturning one another into the street, is all that represents him. Meanwhile, back on Earth, the “old style” humans need to rediscover a lot of technology and skills fast, because their former servitor robots the voynix are really keen on killing all the humans. Into this fray come the moravecs, part-human and part-machine, descendants of machines sent out to Jupiter prior to humanity’s leap into posthumanity. He has had a part in convincing the Trojans and Greeks to unite against the Olympian Gods, who are actually posthumans. First we have Thomas Hockenberry, a “scholic” rebuilt from the writings and DNA of a 21st-century scholar to bear witness to the ersatz Trojan War playing out on a terraformed Mars. Picking up where Ilium left off, Olympos has a lot of plot threads/characters to summarize, so bear with me. As with Ilium, I almost gave up on it-but I soldiered on, and honestly? Not worth it. This is what clinched my dislike of Olympos. Not only would it have refreshed me on the plot, but I actually mentioned the uncomfortable, rapey, male-gazeyness of Simmons’ writing in that review. I really should have read my review of Ilium before diving into Olympos. Sometimes, Kara, you need to listen to yourself more. The last part of the book is OMG and then there is the ending that just is the cherry on the cake. It was still exciting to read, but I was just eager for things to really get exciting. It was quite interesting to read, though at times there was just SO MUCH dialogue that I got a bit tired of it all, I noticed that my head and eyes just started wandering (and they already do that a lot, but here it is even more). Keiichi finds out all sorts of more things about the town and about the Sonozaki's. This time the prelude is over and people start dying. The next part in the series and this time the gore happens. |
